Introduction

The Faculty of fine Arts is dedicated to the education ofprofessional artists and scholars of the history and theory of art. The emphasis is laid on creative identity of students and teachers to foster an approach to the study and practice of art which isinquiring, experimental and research minded.

 

The major subject areas are Painting, Sculpture, Applied Art andGraphic Arts which have a constructive and interactiverelationship. The students are admitted to the Undergraduatecourses on the basis of their aptitude in the subject so that theycan learn within a specialist environment while benefitting frominteraction with the staff, students and facilities. Students areexpected to develop their own work with tutorials and technicalassistance according to their needs. The Faculty also offersresearch facilities in every area, leading to Ph.D. The UniversityGrants Commission has honoured the Faculty with prestigiousSpecial Assistance Programme like D.S.A. andASIHSS.

 

There are about 500 students registered for taught programmes.Regular contact between graduates and undergraduatesprovides a healthy and active cross fertilization of ideas andexchange of experiences.

 

The Faculty is situated opposite SayajiBaug and Baroda

Museum and Picture Gallery in the leafy green surroundingsadjacent to Sayajigunj. The pleasant environment is backed byspacious and well-equipped studios. The training offersopportunities for students to access a range of learning resourcesand research opportunities to have individual ability andexpression through one to one teaching, group tutorials,seminars, visual aids, books, exhibitions, visiting artists,craftsmen as well as study tours, field trips and Fine Arts Fair toprovide necessary exposure.

 

For the first time in independent India, in June 1950, a programmeof study was introduced to offer UG/Diploma, PG/Post-DiplomaCourses at the Faculty of Fine Arts, a constituent institution of theMaharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Professor MarkandBhatt, N.S. Bendre, Pradosh Das Gupta, ShankoChaudhury, Dr.Motichandra, Dr. Goetz, K.G. Subramanyan are amongst thepioneers. The alumni includes a large number of best knownartists of the country.

 

Traditionally, many of the talented alumni have continued to serveas teachers and working artists who cherish consciousunderstanding, engagement and awareness of various cultures,along with studio practice and study of Indian and Westerntraditions apart from lively discourse of contemporary art.

Admission to a higher class depends upon full lime regular work,attendance and satisfactory completion of Class Work,Assignments and Tests during both Academic Terms and anInternal Examination atthe end ofthe year.Classes and teaching for BVAand Diploma will begin following theannouncement of Admission List for the year in early July.

Entrance Requirements

 

(i) Applicants are required to have passed the HigherSecondary School Certificate Examination or XIIthStandard of the Gujarat State Board with English or anequivalent examination recognized by the MaharajaSayajirao University of Baroda with minimum 50% ofmarks, for First Year Degree course.

 

(ii) For admission in Diploma, candidate must have passedHigher Secondary (XIIth Std.) exam conducted by GujaratState Board or equivalent exam recognized by theUniversity passing it with or without English as one of thesubject and minimum 50% marks.

 

(iii) Candidates having art as one of the subjects in Xth or XIIthStd. OR who have cleared the intermediate drawing examwill be exempted from this cut line of percentage.

 

(iv) The applicants who failed only in 01 subject in 12thexamination can also appear in the Aptitude Test. If thecandidate pass the Aptitude Test than he/she has to how the passing certificate of that 01 subject in which he/she

failed.

 

Students who passed H.S.C. examination before 2011 arenot eligible for the B.V.A. &D.V.A. course.

 

It is desirable to maintain and produce portfolio of work in supportof the applicants interest in Fine Arts during a personal interview.

Candidates applying for Painting, Sculpture, AppliedAria andGraphic Aria are required to enclose the following:

 

1. Folio or minimum 10-15 photographs or reproduction ofRecent Works, duly attested by the Professor/Head of theDepartment or Head of the Institution.

2. A brief statement on the work with intent for higher study in250words.

3. Evidence of eligibility qualification with the mark sheets andcertificate.

 

The first scrutiny will be done on the basis of Photographs and theStatement of intent by the applicant and selected candidates willbe called for an Entrance Test and Personal Interview in therespective department on the notified dates printed on the form.

 

All Applied Aria candidates should remain present for theAdmission Test.

Candidates are required to produce portfolio of work duringthe interview.

The final selection is subject to the candidates is aptitude andexcellence in the subject to specialization. Candidates whoseresults of qualifying examinations are awaited may submit theform and appear for the Aptitude Test provisionally. Theiradmissions, however can be confirmed only after they havepassed the requisite qualifying examination before beginnings ofthe Classes in the Faculty.

MA(Fine) in Museology Course

Applicants seeking admission to M.A. {Fine) Museology musthave passed a Bachelor’s degree examination or a Master’sDegree examination in Arts or Science {with) subjects like History,Sociology, Political Science, Ancient History, Archaeology,Anthropology, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Botany, Zoology or aBachelor’s degree examination or Master’s degree examinationin Visual Arts/Fine Arts, Education, Library Science and HomeScience. The candidates possessing Master’s degree in varioussubjects as stated above will be given preference for admission tothe degree course in Museology.One Year in service Post-Graduate Diploma in MuseologyCandidate who would like to join this course must have put in atleast one year service in a recognized museum and shouldpossess at least a Bachelor’s degree in one of the subjects likeHistory, Ancient History, Sociology, Political Science,Archaeology, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Botany, Zoology,Visual Arts/Fine Arts, Education, Psychology, Home Science andLibrary Science from any recognized university.

The condition of experience can be relaxed in case of candidateswho possess collections and intend to set up a museum. Suchcases will be decided by the departmental committee withapproval of the Dean.

Certificate Course for in service Foreign/Indian Students

Admission requirements:

{a) Admission is open to persons who have already put in atleast two years of service in a recognized museum on a postinvolving organization.

 

{b) He/She should possess good knowledge of English andproduce a certificate from a competent authority to thiseffect.

{c) He/She should have passed a school leaving examinationequivalent to Matriculation or S.S.C. in India or the SeniorCambridge certificate.

{d) Durationofthecourseisoneyear.

{e) The candidate having passed graduate or post-graduatedegree with at least six months museum experience{technical) can be considered for admission.

Overseas Students

Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Diploma Courses orNon-Collegiate

For the foreign/NRI students: Online registration is not availableforforeign/NRI students So, they are requested to send a demanddraft of Rs. 500/- in favourof ‘The Registrar, The M.S. Universityof Baroda’ payable at vadodara along with photocopies of all thecertificates and 02 passport size photographs for offlineregistration. They are requested to send these documents anddemand draft to The Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, Prof. C. C. MehtaRoad, PushpaBaug, The M.S. University of Baroda, Vadodara-390002, Gujarat, IndiaOverseas Applicants are required to follow similar procedure foradmission except that they are not expected to attend AptitudeTest or Interview in person.

Entrance requirements for the courses are same as for otherstudents as shown in this brochure.

In fact Faculty of Fine Arts is foundation stone of entire M.S. University. This university was started as “Kala Bhavan” to impart training in Painting. The University was the first in the Country to  offering Degree and Post-Graduate Courses in the various branches of Fine Arts.
