It helps in improving your stroke lines, understanding of shapes from different angles etc. 

Then comes the main concept of designing that is sketching from imagination by using certain techniques. There are three stages in anyone’s life in the way to becoming a designer. First while preparing for design college entrance like nid, nift, ceed, nata, jee b.arch, fddi, pearl, spa, jj college of architecture etc for the fields like product design, automobile design, car design, animation, gaming, architecture and interior design etc. because in such exams the questions asked are supposed to be sketched from imagination. Few examples are.. creating a car for the year 2050, sketching a bed room from lizard’s point of view, sketching futuristic fly over, designing a bus stand taking inspiration from a pen’s cap etc, designing a logo for some new company, pattern making, book page cover design, t-shirt design etc etc. 

Second, when one enters in design college & working on weekly or monthly projects & assignments simply from imagination, &  third is when after passing one becomes a designer & to work on projects by hearing the client’s ideas.

Hence sketching, designing is what you is done by executing your ideas on paper or computer.
